Since the Margaret River and Pemberton Chardonnays from Larry Cherubino were hugely popular when we first offered these to our customers a few months ago, and since both wines promptly sold out, we’ve been searching for another parcel of Larry’s top Australian Chardonnays.
We’re thrilled to have secured and now be able to share a small parcel of Cherubino’s 2023 Willows Vineyard Chardonnay.
The Willows Vineyard sits in Wilyabrup in the heart of Margaret River, surrounded by the vineyards of the Australia’s winemaking great and good; Leeuwin Estate, Cullen, Moss Wood, Vasse Felix & Pierro to name a few. The vines sit on gravelly soils, and benefit from a long growing season and cooling ocean influence. The 2023 vintage was one of the most seamless on record – Decanter Magazine commented in a recent article that it’s a “5+/5 – a perfect year – one of the greatest vintages of the past decade” in Margaret River.
Gingin is the name of the Chardonnay clone here, now known for world class whites, it’s genetically smaller berries have an unusually high skin to pulp ratio, lower yields and ultimately more concentrated juice. As a result of these factors, less than 5,000 bottles were produced.
Having tasted the 2023 we’re offering today, we wholeheartedly recommend this ripe, tensile and complete Chardonnay for enjoying on arrival and over the coming decade.
Larry Cherubino (originally from Italy) and his wife Edwina first acquired land in Frankland River (a sub region of Western Australia’s Great Southern region) in 2004. Now, they have vineyards across Western Australia’s vast wine map, including small holdings in the well-known and celebrated Margaret River region as well as the lesser known but vastly improved Pemperton region. Each is influenced by different factors – Margaret River is cooled by the Indian Ocean, Pemberton by the Southern Ocean but with easterly winds that warm and help grapes ripen fully.
