We are excited to share the newest vintage from Saint-Aubin’s foremost winemaker Olivier Lamy.
Undisputedly one of Burgundy’s greatest contemporary vignerons, since the 2021 vintage Olivier has taken the decision to hold back and age his wines for one year longer in tank before releasing them, which is why we are only now offering the Lamy 2023s at the same time as many other producers’ 2024s (full main Burgundy offer HERE). There is also a small selection of late release 2020 magnums available on the shipment and listed at the bottom of this offer.
This move to a later release has enabled Lamy to bottle the wines later affording them a longer period over which to develop extra complexity and to then settle in bottle for more time before transportation. One of many small details he believes results in better final wines. This also has the added benefit that when bottles are opened (often early in restaurants), they are more complete and expressive wines.
For those not familiar with Domaine Hubert Lamy, the whites are made in a mineral and taught style, full of citrus and zippy acidity with a subtle touch of gun-flint reduction initially. With age, the whites round out and the fruit develops and becomes more prominent, often with an incredible honeyed note that balances well with the tension and vibrancy. The reds are easy going, silky and a joy to drink.
The wines are for UK storage / UK delivery only on arrival, offered under bond and En Primeur and will be shipped in March / April this year.
“Olivier Lamy took me through his bottled 2023s. He is one of a handful of growers who no longer show their wines in bottle, opting to show the finished wines instead, which is no problem because their release is delayed by 12 months. This year, Lamy offered one-on-one tastings, which I personally prefer to the group tastings he’s organised in the last three or four years. “We picked the majority from September 2 to 12 and a small parcel on September 13 when the fruit had ripened,” said Lamy. “There was some hail at the end of June with stones as big as tennis balls. The hailstones broke some of our branches, so I did a bit of green harvest. The crop was a bit larger than usual, around 45 hl/ha for the reds, 30 hl/ha for the old-vine whites and 60 hl/ha for whites from younger vines. We did a little more crushing to increase phenolics and used more lees to enhance aging. I used no new oak except for a couple of barrels. All of the 2023s have been bottled since the end of July via a special machine that bottles by gravity. I have done some testing and it works much better, even compared to machines that use nitrogen [to protect the wines].
