Bachelet-Monnot Premier Cru tasting

“Heading down to the village of Dezize-lès-Maranges always leaves me feeling happy because it means I am en route to meet Alexandre and Marc Bachelet and tasting their impressive whites and reds…. What can I say apart from every year these boys slam-dunk another raft of outstanding wines that brim with freshness and vigour. They have the knack. Their 2019 Bâtard-Montrachet is as good as any you will come across, but really what I love is how they elevate Maranges into something that exceeds all expectations, as demonstrated by a 2017 Maranges La Fussière I ordered from a restaurant list the following week.”

Neal Martin, vinous.com, Oct 2020

Over the past 20 years, Bachelet-Monnot have put the sleepy appellation of Maranges on the map. At the far southern end of the Côte d’Or and Côte de Beaune, the Bachelet-Monnot brothers (pictured above with their father) now make three Premier Cru reds from their home appellation:

  • Maranges Premier Cru ‘Clos de la Boutière’ – 2.86ha of which Bachelet-Monnot own half (1.40ha). The plot borders Santenay and the soil here is rich in clay which gives a denser, rounder Pinot Noir.
  • Maranges Premier Cru ‘Les Clos Roussots’ – A larger 28ha vineyard continuing from Santenay ‘Clos Rousseau’, here there is a mix of limestone and a little clay as well as some marl. For Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, this is the most recent addition and they have been making this cuvée from the 2022 vintage. The Domaine has always had just 0.45ha of old vines in this plot, which they have now fully taken back and bottle separately to the village VV Maranges bottling.
  • Maranges Premier Cru ‘La Fussière’ – The largest vineyard across the three Maranges communes with various sub-plots. Bachelet-Monnot are among the producers to make both Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay here. In total they have 5 ha (12.4 acres). Bachelet-Monnot have five different plots, each vinified with differing amounts of whole clusters. More limestone in the soil here which means this is normally the most lithe, agile and mineral of the three Premier Cru Pinots.

Their father, Jean-François Bachelet, was also a leading advocate for Maranges getting its AOC status in 1989.  Currently we now have three vintages (2021, 2022, 2023) available, and these 1er Cru reds are arguably the best value Pinot Noirs on our list.

The 2021 Burgundies have turned out fantastically well – vibrant, elegant and classical wines with innate charm and drinkability.  The 2022s and 2023s are the result of warmer growing seasons, and as such have depth and stuffing to drink well over many years. These are slightly riper in profile, offering darker fruit tones as well as crunchy berry fruit.

Tasting Notes:

Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com, Jan 2025

“They used plentiful whole bunch vinification, 30% for most wines and 50% for a few, Bourgogne Rouge because it was a bit ripe at the end, Pommard and Clos Roussots because it suits those terroirs. ..Domaine Bachelet-Monnot has become really smart at making pinot, as well as chardonnay.”

Neal Martin, vinous.com, Nov 2022

“..while the Maranges Les Fussières demonstrates what this oft-overlooked appellation can do in the right hands. Those right hands come a little better than Marc and Alexandre Bachelet.”

Neal Martin, Vinous.com

“Alexandre and Marc Bachelet have been on fire over recent vintages…My budget would be invested in the outstanding Maranges premier crus such as Fussière and Clos de la Boutière that I strongly suspect will represent some of the best values over the entire of the Côte d’Or…and if I were a millionaire, I would still buy them.”
