Burgundy Wine Vineyard

10/12/2024

November is always one of our favourite months in the wine trade as it is when we (the sales and buying team) travel to Burgundy and Chablis to taste the soon to be released ‘new’ vintage. In November, we put in the hard yards and tasted over 180 wines from the 2023 vintage, both red and white. As some of the wines are beginning to be released now and the bulk in January, our thoughts and overview on the vintage are set out below. It was a fascinating vintage to taste and illustrated the difficulties Burgundian vignerons go through to produce such excellent wines. Although the vintage was easier to contend with than 2024, it was clear that there were still major decisions they had to make to ensure the wine they produced were of outstanding quality.

The 2023 growing season

In places, 2023 was one of the largest crops on record and a fair amount of quality producers had to do more than one pass of green harvesting (especially for the Pinot Noir which is less able to handle higher yields). Other than a small episode of hail in July in Meursault, there was little more to talk about on the weather front. There was an average amount of rainfall and no real danger of disease (in contrast to 2024 where disease pressure and some hail has devastated crops). 2023 was a ‘perfect’ growing season according to Arnaud Germain of Domaine Germain in Saint Romain when we met last week. Indeed, Arnaud added 10 new concrete eggs for vinification this year, to blend with the juice from barrel. He explained that this process requires very healthy grapes as it amplifies the fruit but at the same time also magnifies any characteristics that are less than perfect. His wines were complex, with very pure fruit and lovely energy demonstrating not only his skills but the quality of fruit he was working with. Incidentally, in 2023 he has added a new white cuvee from perhaps the best terroir in Saint-Romain, ‘Sous le Chateau’. His 2023s were brilliant, offering incredible value and are a wonderful sequel to his very popular 2022’s.

August in the Cote d’Or started with two weeks that were unseasonably cold. This was a headache and worry for producers who were scrambling around to re-arrange picking teams and worrying about achieving correct ripeness in a critical time for the vine. A nervous few days gave way to a new issue, with a heatwave forecast for the end of August and into the first weeks of September. The safety of the pickers was a primary concern with temperatures hitting north of 30 degrees by midday, and indeed sadly there have since been reports in Champagne of 5 deaths due to the heat. Many harvested early in the morning as soon as light enabled and stopped before 1pm. Alongside safety, this also had the benefit of preventing the grapes from getting too hot before pressing and avoiding early fermentation. Indeed, many Domaine’s such as Bachelet-Monnot now store the picked grapes in their temperature controlled cuverie to cool them over night before pressing the next day – lessons learnt from hot vintages in the past.

Harvest date is always a contentious subject, but in 2023, particularly for the whites, it was even more so. Maxime Lafouge of Domaine Lafouge (an estate who seem to improve year on year) told us that due to the extreme heat, grapes were gaining a potential full degree of alcohol each day at the latter end. Those however that chose to harvest at the correct time have achieved wines with concentrated fruit, terroir typicity and great freshness.

In the Cotes de Nuits, the later ripening Pinot Noir meant harvest date was a week or so later than the Cotes de Beaune and the weather was back to normal temperatures. Some of the best wines here are spellbindingly good. They are not brutish and bold like you would expect but pure, fresh and elegant with a vibrant energy. Sebastian Cathiard’s 1er Cru Vosne Romanee Malconsorts and Thomas Collardot’s Clos de La Roche from Coquard-Loison-Fleurot being highlights, amongst many.

The freshness is somewhat surprising given that warm and dry vintages often have low levels of PH. Thierry Pillot of Domaine Paul Pillot (whose wines were amongst the best Chardonnay we tasted) theorises that since temperatures have increased, vines have started to adapt to produce more acidity in the fruit. 2023 was a growing season that although relatively uneventful, could turn quickly on a bad decision. Thankfully all the wines we tasted last week were successful and I left feeling very positive about the vintage, from generic Bourgogne all the way up to Grand Cru. There will also be plenty to sell given the crop, so we hope prices are sensible to allow clients to buy.

We will be offering Patrick Piuze of Chablis’ 2023’s in the next week or so, where you will see my thoughts on the 2023 vintage in Chablis as well, so please do look out for this.
