“This domaine deserves to be better known. As well as their Champerrier and Ruchottes cuvées, the single-vineyard Gevrey Chambertin bottlings are very sound wines and the premier cru Petite Chapelle is definitely noteworthy.”

Having first visited Etienne Marchand in Gevrey-Chambertin last year and subsequently offered a small quantity of his fine 2022 reds earlier this year, we visited Domaine Marchand-Grillot again last month to taste their now bottled 2023s once more.

This understated Gevrey producer is crafting balanced and classic Pinot Noir from one of the most revered villages in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin on the whole (above all others in the Côte) is blessed with a higher percentage of very old vines – these older vines may produce less bunches and grapes each year, but the fruit they do give up makes for wonderfully concentrated and complex juice. The vines in Marchand-Grillot’s Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Champerrier’ for example date back to 1903, and this becomes very apparent when tasting the wine.

“I do enjoy the fruit quality found in Etienne Marchand’s wines.”

Jasper Morris MW, Jan 2025

The quality from these older vines allows Etienne to be relatively hands off in the winery. But for all its older vine material, this is very much a Domaine moving forward – in 2022 they purchased a prized plot called ‘Clos de la Cabotte’ within the Combes du Bas, located conveniently opposite the winery in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin and containing vines planted in the 1940s. Sporting a special label, the inaugural 2023 vintage of this cuvée was a beautifully complete and layered Gevrey village, and comes highly recommended.

Of the sixteen or so different wines they made in 2023, we’ve narrowed down to a selection of the five best wines we feel they made in this vintage.

Please see our offer below with tasting notes from Jasper Morris MW, as well as a little info on Marchand-Grillot. Offered subject to remaining un-sold, we will be collecting these from the Domaine with the 2022s next month.

The Domaine

The people and the wines here are unpretentious, charming and rustic in the best sense of the word. These wines have character and a sense of place. It is fascinating to taste the various lieux-dit Gevrey bottlings, each with its own distinct terroir and personality. The reds are attractive and so enjoyable at the modest end, and impressively fine at the top of the scale. Not to mention, they offer value in one of the hardest regions in which to find it! We are therefore thrilled to be able to offer the magnificent 2023s from this address.

Since 2009, the domaine has been run by Etienne Marchand on the winemaking and his sister Marion on the business side. The Marchand family has been based here and tending the vines for seven generations, but it was Etienne and Marion’s grandparents who really started the domaine, and their father, Jacques, who in the seventies began domaine bottling and identifying plots within their vineyard holdings and bottling as separate parcels.

Whilst not certified organic, for the last 30 years they have forgone the use of herbicides and pesticides and are judicious in their use of sulphur. Grapes are generally destemmed, except for the Champerrier Vieilles Vignes and the Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru. Most of the wines are aged in 30% new oak and bottled with wax tops.

We wholeheartedly encourage you to try some of the wines from Domaine Marchand-Grillot – this domaine has been quietly crafting beautiful wine for years and we feel it is high time for more people to get to know them.

Finally a quote from Jasper Morris MW:

“This domaine is a little bit off the world radar but I find the wines really interesting. Some of the single vineyard cuvées can be excellent, but I find particular value in his characterful regional wines of both colours.”
