We have just landed our first shipment from Paolo Giordano, a Barolo producer who we discovered and sought to represent in the UK last year. We are so happy we were successful, as having revisited and retasted a couple of times now, we truly believe these are some of the most elegant and characterful wines I have tasted from the region.
As well as their Barolo, they also make a Langhe Nebbiolo, which is a serious wine in its own right. It is drinkable right off the bat unlike the Barolo which undoubtedly needs a little time. The 2022 Langhe Nebbiolo is in a fabulous spot for drinking now, though it will certainly be fine to hold for another 3-4+ years. This honestly was more impressive than some of the Barolo we tasted on our trip. Fragrant, juicy strawberry and bitter orange, an earthy tar note, vibrant acidity and long fine tannins. This couldn’t be anything other than Nebbiolo, and a particularly fine representation at that.
This has just arrived and so now available for immediate delivery. I would urge you to take a couple of cases to try out this new producer, this is a great introduction to the style.
“The arrival of a major talent… Giordano is a name to watch.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous Sept 2024
Based in Perno, Paolo Giordano and his wife Ileana are new onto the scene (2018 was their inaugural Barolo vintage), although the winery has been in Ileana’s family since 1939. However, up until Paolo and Ileana took over, the family had rented out their vineyards and sold their fruit to several top producers.
Now, they simply make one Barolo Perno, a Langhe Nebbiolo and a Dolcetto. This is a refreshingly concise range, when so many producers produce huge ranges of single vineyard Crus that can be confusing and not necessarily beneficial. Indeed, Barolo historically was always a blend of different sites, rather than made as a single vineyard. The Barolo here is a blend from two vineyard plots in Perno, one lower section with marl and sand soils, and an area higher up the slope with sand and clay soils.
