“A few years ago, we started working with an exciting young producer making really pure and vibrant wines in the Cotes de Beaune”

Domaine Dujardin

They are a producer we really believe in with a trajectory that is really exciting but, not enough people have tasted the wines and we need to change this. Highlighted below is why we think this Domaine deserves your attention, plus an offering of mixed ‘discovery’ cases at a preferential price.

The Domaine farm 8ha both red and white across the appellations of Monthelie, Auxey-Duresses (Blanc), Meursault (Blanc) and Beaune.

The current generation are brother and sister Paul and Margaux who took over from their parents in 2018. Previous to this, the majority of the crop was sold in bulk to larger negociants, as was often the most cost-effective way for smaller producers. With a stronger economy for Burgundian wine, Paul and Margaux saw the opportunity to exit these contracts and set about producing their own wine, firstly in a rented cuverie and then from the 2021 vintage in their newly purchased and renovated cellars in the heart of the village.

They use a low percentage of new oak and focus on fresh pure and site-specific wines showcasing the enviable holdings they have. Much of the work is done in the vineyard where they farm organically and are lucky to work with very healthy old vines from 40 to 60+ years of age.

Some critic comments:

“The style is fine and elegant, emphasizing perfume and purity of fruit. An address to watch.”
William Kelley, robertparker.com, Jan 2023

“The Dujardins make a very precise and fine style of Chardonnay”
Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy 2nd Edition

Monthelie

Whilst there is a lovely freshness and vibrancy to all the wines, including the Meursault and Auxey-Duresses holdings, it is the wines from the village of Monthelie which we personally find so interesting. Monthelie is one of the so called ‘golden triangle’ villages in the Cotes de Beaune, the others being Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. All three are very pretty to look at with their obvious merits, but Monthelie has a particularly interesting and vastly diverse terroir due to its elevated position. Vines stretch from the border with Volnay in the East, up on the easily ripening hill (abutting Volnay Santenots), then into the valley West towards Auxey-Duresses (both high up on the rocky cote and lower into the clay rich valley) and then finally into the combe of the valley towards Nantoux at its northern most point. The change in climate over the last 10+ years has meant appellations such as Monthelie now ripen properly. Gone are the days of mean green wines! With good value Burgundy becoming increasingly difficult to find, it is important to point out here that these remain very well priced.

Due to all of the factors mentioned above, this translates into complex and very balanced, delicious wines. The cuvee where parcels are blended together; Monthelie Village Rouge and Trois Climats, give an overview of the village as a whole or ‘artists impression’ and the site-specific cuvees offer snapshots into the different terroir. For example, if you have enjoyed Volnay Santenots in the past then you will love the Vignes Rondes, if you like pure ripe strawberry fruit and moreish salinity then the Trois Climats cuvee is really excellent. It’s the same for the whites, the wines from Les Plantes give ripeness and citrus whilst Goulotte has a more tropical fruit profile which marries well with the fresher winemaking.

We really believe in this estate as a whole and feel privileged to be working with them directly. As mentioned, we have put together a discovery case of their reds and separately one of their whites. Across multiple vintages, we have chosen these specific wines as we believe it will give you a rounded understanding of the estate and the wines they make.
