Marco Rocca, winemaker extraordinaire at Piedmont’s la Ca’ Nova, is making old-school, refined wines which are the talk of Piedmont currently. His meteoric rise over the last 6 vintages has been nothing short of extraordinary. Crucially, prices remain incredibly reasonable across the board from his Barbera d’Alba all the way up to his incredible single vineyard bottlings. Today, we are delighted to offer the latest release of his 2020 Barbera d’Alba at under £15 a bottle inc Duty + VAT. If you are in need of a new house wine or are looking to diversify your drinking selection from home, then look no further. This is a knockout wine for the price.
Barbera is often overlooked for its more “trendy” stablemate, Nebbiolo. However, in the right hands and in quality vintages like this, Barbera offers a terrific expression of red juicy currents, rose petal and savoury spice, all of which are interwoven with grippy tannins and fresh acidity. These are versatile wines that can be enjoyed with or without food and designed to drink young.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous has long heralded this wonderful Barbaresco estate saying it is “the single most under-the-radar winery in all of Piedmont… The wines just keep getting better and better, yet prices remain exceedingly modest, especially within the context of today’s market… I can’t recommend these wines highly enough”. We certainly concur with his comments.
If you are yet to experience the wines of la Ca’ Nova, then this is a great place to start. Should you enjoy the Barbera, then I would suggest delving deeper into his portfolio (see below) seeking out the 2019 Barbaresco and stunning single vineyard Montestefano and ‘Montefico’ Vigna Bric Mentina – the new 2020 vintage of these wines will be released next year.
