We have just received a small allocation of Pierre-Henri Rougeot 2022s. Based at Domaine Rougeot in Meursault, Pierre-Henri is one of the most engaging and insightful winemakers in the region. He first started helping at the family Domaine in 2010, having previously studied in Beaune, and subsequently worked for a small cooperage followed by a stint at Domaine de Montille. He has been making his own wines since 2017 and took over full control of Domaine Rougeot in April 2019.
Alongside the family Domaine, he runs his own micro-négoce, ‘Pierre-Henri Rougeot’, comprising barely 1.5 ha, where he produces fewer than 10,000 bottles each year. It is worth noting that, despite buying in some of the fruit to make these wines, some of the fruit is sourced from the family Domaine (Sous la Velle for example).
Pierre-Henri runs his négoce operation organically and, where possible, biodynamically (having converted the family Domaine in 2016). Highly sensitive to sulphur himself, he chooses to vinify without sulphur, only using minimal amounts of S02 at bottling, and only when he deems it necessary. Pierre-Henri is also judicious with his handling of oak, opting to use no new oak for his négoce wines. He is also very particular about where he sources his grapes, only working with growers whom he knows well and has established relationships. This meticulous work means he is able to balance a natural approach to winemaking with traditional Burgundian values, leading expressive wines with energy, balance and individual character. Pierre-Henri Rougeot is always one of our favourite winemakers to visit, and if you are not already familiar with his wines, I strongly recommend trying a case or two these brilliant Burgundies.
