Patrick Piuze

“In the cellar, the approach is simple: Piuze believes in keeping different terroirs separate and produces numerous different cuvées—including multiple bottlings from the Chablis AOC—making his house the best address to explore the diversity of this northern part of the Burgundy region, as Piuze produces a number of cuvées and lieux-dits designed to highlight the variety this large appellation encompasses.”

Our shipment of the 2023 vintage from Chablis winemaker Patrick Piuze has just arrived and is now available for delivery.

In our initial offer we used our notes having visited there last year, however the wines have also just been positively reviewed and scored by The Wine Advocate’s new Champagne & Chablis correspondent Kristaps Karklins, whose notes we include below.

Whilst we have availability of some of his wines in full cases, we have put together a 2023 Piuze Chablis mixed case, at a discount. This is a great way to get to know Patrick’s style of winemaking and showcase the nuances between the various terroirs. From some of his ‘Terroir’ wines up to some Grand Cru Bougros, this is a great value mixed case that I would really recommend.

With temperatures hitting 18 degrees in London this week, as well as Easter and a couple of bank holiday weekends in the not-too-distant future, having a few cases of delicious, fine Chablis to hand can surely be no bad thing!

“Cheerful and frank, Quebecois Patrick Piuze established his eponymous small négociant house in Chablis, just down the street from Vincent Dauvissat, in 2008, after stints working with Jean-Marie Guffens and Brocard. There is no denying that his presence has enriched the region.

Though all the grapes are purchased (from 18 different suppliers), everything is harvested by hand, with Piuze employing his own team for this purpose. He is also a comparatively early harvester. The grapes are pressed slowly and firmly in old Vaslin presses, after which the wines are moved by gravity and fermented in second-hand barrels (of high-acid vintages, mostly from Champagne) and stainless steel. The sur lie élevage is of comparatively short duration (between seven and nine months), as Piuze aims to capture the maximum of freshness and vitality and, thus, is not an advocate of long élevage.

The resulting wines are elegantly textural but incisive, clearly differentiated by site, produced at the peak of his winemaking powers.”
